Welcome to the Power Macintosh™ native version of the The Cartoon Guide to Physics CD-ROM, based in part on the book of the same name. We hope you enjoy this program.
TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS
• Any Macintosh with 25MHz and a 68030 CPU or higher
• System 7.1 or higher
• At least 8 MB of installed RAM*
• 5 MB of free hard disk space
• 13-inch (640x480) or larger color monitor
• double-speed CD-ROM drive
*Power native applications require more RAM to run than non-Power native applications. With a minimum of 12 MB of installed RAM, Power Mac users can experience optimum performance from The Cartoon Guide to Physics CD-ROM.
SETTING UP
These instructions assume a basic familiarity with Macintosh interface conventions. If you're just getting started with your computer, and find the operations described below confusing, please refer to the documentation that came with your computer.
To install this title, follow these steps:
1. Drag the Physics icon from the CD to your hard drive.
2. Open the System Extensions folder on the CD to show the extensions necessary or recommended for use with this title.
3. If you don't already have these extensions installed, or are unsure, drag the appropriate icons one-by-one to your System Folder icon and drop them. The Macintosh will guide you through the rest of the installation.
4. If you install any extensions, restart you computer to make them active.
IMPORTANT: ABOUT MEMORY
The Cartoon Guide to Physics CD-ROM requires a minimum of 8 MB of installed RAM. If you have only 8MB of RAM installed, you'll need to make sure you have enough memory available.
With Virtual Memory on, the Cartoon Guide to Physics will require 5,500K of free RAM. However if Virtual Memory is off, the Cartoon Guide to Physics will require 6,087K of free RAM.
To make sure you have enough free RAM available follow these instructions:
1. If your machine is using some form of memory extension, such as Connectix's RAM Doubler™, turn it off. If you make a change, restart your Mac before proceeding.
2. Quit all open applications. To see which, if any, applications are open, click the desktop once, and hold down the mouse on the finder icon (the little computer in the upper right corner of your screen). If there are applications listed in the finder menu, select each application listed, and press -Q to quit.
3. To find out how your Mac is using memory now, click once on the desktop, and from the Apple Menu select “About This Macintosh...”.
A. The “Total Memory” figure tells you the amount of installed RAM in your machine.
B. This is the amount of memory your system software is using. Trimming your System Software's memory allotment means turning off or temporarily disabling extensions and control panels that you do not need while operating the CD-ROM. The easiest way to do this is to use an extensions manager such as Extensions Manager. If this is something you are not comfortable doing, refer to Macintosh documentation, or seek the help of knowledgeable person(s).
C. Note the “Largest Unused Block” figure. This is the amount of RAM you have available. If it is more than 5,500K, you're fine. If it is less than 5,500K, however, you should take steps to trim the amount of memory your system software is using. This will make more RAM available for The Cartoon Guide to Physics .
STARTING CARTOON GUIDE TO PHYSICS
To start Physics follow these steps:
1. If your computer has an external CD-ROM drive, turn it on first and then turn on the computer.
2. Make sure the Cartoon Guide to Physics CD-ROM is in your CD-ROM drive.
3. Double-click the copy of Physics in your hard drive.
HELP
Throughout the program there is section-specific help available in The Cartoon Guide to Physics . To use it, click the “Help” button from within any of the four main sections.
To quit The Cartoon Guide to Physics press the “Setup” button on the main screen, or -Q from anywhere in the program.
PERFORMANCE TIP
Set your monitor to display 256 colors for improved performance.
TROUBLESHOOTING
If you experience performance problems (e.g. video is out of sync and choppy, sections do not load) try to make more memory available by trimming your system software's memory allocation. Disable extensions and control panels that you do not need while operating the CD-ROM.
If you are using system software version 7.5, use the Extensions Manager control panel to easily disable extensions that do not need to be active in order to use a CD-ROM. If you do not have an Extensions Manager control panel, to disable extensions follow these instructions below:
Open your system folder and check to see if there are folders named “Extensions disabled” and “Control Panels disabled”. If these folders do not already exist in your system folder create them. Open your Extensions folder and drag unneccessary extensions to the “Extensions disabled” folder. Open your Control Panels folder and drag unneccessary control panels to the “Control Panels disabled”. Always restart your machine after disabling extensions.
If your computer is a Macintosh 7100/80, then use the regular Macintosh installation method. Do not use the Power installation.
